COOGI Burton Collaboration Jacket – Girls anthem

Longtime friend of the Burton fam,Santigold, just dropped an awesome video for her new song Girls which is the anthem for this very show. The video made its debut today and instead of all the television footage one may expect from a soundtrack music video, she features an eclectic mix of everyday…you guessed it…girls. From school yards to ice rinks to desksides — the video shows girls in their natural habitat singing along to Santi’s new piece of gold. I also couldn’t help but notice how great she looks decked out in the Burton / Coogi jacket while dancing and laughing with her….girls.

The Art of COOGI – Jayson Musson Exhibiting in NYC

Renowned Youtube art critic Hennessey Youngman, also known as Master of Fine arts graduate, Jayson Musson opened the the latest show of his artwork — huge canvases of cut-up and stretched COOGI sweaters.

The classic COOGI sweater has recently come to inform Mr. Musson’s work as a visual artist. A new exhibition of that work, “Halcyon Days,” opened Wednesday at Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn’s Salon 94 on the Bowery, where Mr. Musson is now represented. The show features pieces made from cut-up Coogi sweaters, stretched and sewn together. It is his first exhibition devoted to the sweater-based works (which he refers to as paintings) and his highest-profile outing in New York to date.

In his own words Hennesy Youngman, aka Jayson Musson, describes his work with the signature COOGI Authentic sweater:
“The thing I found most alluring about Coogi sweaters was how painterly they were. They seemingly lingered on the borders of gestural abstraction. I made the joke, “That Coogi looks like a Pollock.” Over the course of the following weeks, I began collecting images of the sweaters, studying their composition. They seemed to defy the traditional logic of the textile, opting instead to appear spontaneous and created by hand rather than machine-made. Each sweater, though a manufactured object seemed to seek its own authenticity. Even the old Coogi slogan “Wearable Art” seemed to confirm the desire for each sweater to be considered an objet unique, a specialized commodity.”

And this is what art critic Marina Galperina said about the canvases in her story in AnimalNewYork.com:

“The pieces are visually and texturally appealing, on a pure abstract art level. The technique deconstructs not just a pattern, but an instantly recognizable visual aspect of ’80s hip hop culture. There are so many levels of meta in this! Maybe Jayson’s “remixing” by cutting and weaving whole fabric together! Maybe he’s “sampling” Coogi by recontextualizing it in the art world! Is this artified kitsch? Do you need an actual familiarity with the brand or with Biggie or Snoop to appreciate this through something other than irony? Look, like all art, it’s open to some interpretation. We’re all entitled to our opinion. But sometimes, you are going to get called out.”

The sweaters are fashion art and they have returned back to the canvas.

Here at COOGI, we can’t really explain the appeal, but we sure love his work!

Congratulations Hennesy.
